Behind Midnight Velvet: The Story of Our Most-Loved Cake
February 8, 2025 · 4 min read
In early 2023, a client came to us with a very specific request. She wanted a birthday cake that felt "like walking into a velvet-draped room at midnight — opulent, mysterious, and just a little dramatic." We did not know it then, but that brief would become the foundation of our signature design.
The Design Challenge
Deep, jewel-toned cakes are notoriously difficult to execute well. The colours can look muddy. The textures can feel heavy. Making a dark cake feel luxurious rather than sombre required significant experimentation with our buttercream formula and colouring process.
The Breakthrough
The turning point was the decision to hand-paint gold accents directly onto the dark surface rather than using gold lustre dust. The result was more controlled, more precise — and far more striking. Three-dimensional dried florals in muted plum and ivory completed the composition.
"When we photographed the first Midnight Velvet, the studio went quiet. Everyone knew we had made something special."
Two Years Later
Midnight Velvet is now our most-ordered cake. We have made it in every size from a 4-inch smash cake to a three-tier wedding centrepiece. The design evolves with each commission — same spirit, always unique.
